LATEST UPDATE
Security Concerns, the Badge Office, and Badging Requirements
The Laboratory is operating under tightened security conditions as a
result of the events of September 11, 2001. Please note the following
regarding access into the Badge Office, badging requirements, and related
matters..
- The Badge Office is open for business with no
change in its hours.
- The "horseshoe drive" (from the Otowi Building past the
Badge Office and around past the Study Center) is closed to all vehicular
traffic. There are NO identity checks
of individuals walking into the "horseshoe area" to get to
the Badge Office. You do not need a badge or photo identification to
get into this area (though you will need photo identification to be
badged).
- Parking in the main parking lot bounded by East Jemez Road and Casa
Grande Avenue is, effective December 21, 2001, again open to all vehicles
and does NOT require presentation
of a valid badge.
- Hosts of visitors to the Laboratory may nevertheless wish to advise
their visitors of parking location options, and of how to take bus shuttles
or walk to the Badge Office. While it is not mandatory, hosts may wish
to meet their visitors who are unfamiliar with the Laboratory and accompany
them to the Badge Office or other meeting locations.
- Visitors who only have a generic
uncleared U.S. visitor badge and are not accompanied by a LANL badgeholder
will not be permitted through security checkpoints.
- Laboratory workers should not park at the Industrial Research Building
("Motorola Building" - this is not Laboratory property and
parking tickets may be issued.)
- At this time there has been NO CHANGE
in the official requirements regarding who does
not need to be badged. Note, however, that some parts of the Otowi
Building previously open to non-badgeholders are now either open only
to badgeholders or to non-badgeholders escorted by badgeholders. The
Study Center is closed to non-badgeholders.
- Before taking a visitor into a facility you are not familiar with,
check
whether any special requirements are in place.
- Be sure that all attache cases, briefcases and the like are tagged
with your name, title, etc. The Badge Office can use your business card
to "tag your bag"
for up to three labels. For more than that, contact S-8
(Emergency Managemant & Response), which runs the Tag
Your Bag program.
- Report any discrepancies from the above current
policies to the S Division Help
Desk (665-2002).
For complete
information on Laboratory security conditions, consult the S Division
Security Update
page.
