Why do I have problems with my badge in access control readers?

If you have determined, based on a review of the Troubleshooting Card or a Web check of your badge access status, that your badge should work, but are still experiencing problems, read on.

You may need to contact the Group responsible for the reader. Access control readers are maintained by two different Groups, S-3 and CCN-4. S-3 is responsible for readers into all Laboratory security areas and some uncleared property-protected areas. CCN-4 is responsible for most property-protected areas and for some facilities inside security areas. Also note that LANSCE (TA-53) has its own access control system.

A simple rule of thumb for figuring out which reader is maintained by which Group is: if the reader itself is gray, it is owned by CCN-4 - call 667-7840 to report a problem; if the reader is black, it is owned by S-3 - call 667-4949 to report a problem. For problems with readers at LANSCE (TA-53), call 665-1010.

Enrollment in badge readers controlled by CCN-4 does not occur automatically upon issuance of your badge. CCN-4 is responsible for access into most of the Laboratory's property-protected buildings and also into some secure locations within the security perimeter. Consult the instructions on who must request enrollment into CCN-4 readers and the procedures to follow, if you need access through badge readers controlled by CCN-4.

Badgeholders accessing LANSCE's badge reader system, may wish to review LANSCE's procedures document, 53FMP 123-03.0 Use of Badge Readers for Building Access.

There are other reasons why your badge may not work. While all of them are covered in the Troubleshooting Checklist mentioned above, the most common problems are:

  • You have an expiration date that has passed
  • You no longer have the appropriate access authorization
  • Your badge status has been changed to INACTIVE (for example, if you are issued a Temporary badge, your regular DOE Standard badge will be set with an INACTIVE status until the Temporary badge is returned to the Badge Office)
  • Your badge is damaged (warped, abraded magnetic stripe)
  • Your "swipe" technique is the problem (try swiping your badge through more slowly, or faster, as the case may be, check that the magnetic stripe is facing in the correct direction)

If you are unable to check your access status directly, the Badge Office can check it if you come in (no information is given over the telephone). It can also re-enroll your hand geometry template, if that is the problem.back to the top of the page
