WHO QUALIFIES
- U.S.
citizens (may not hold dual citizenship)
- Cleared = has a clearance recognized or approved by DOE/HQ
or granted by NATO
- Is not carrying or does not have a current DOE standard badge issued
by a site other than LANL - attempted use of a non-LANL site-specific
badge to gain access into a LANL security area is grounds
for confiscation
- Clearance is not held
by LANL
- Purpose of visit involves classified discussions and/or access to
classified matter
- In this context, "Official
visitor" =
- a person who represents the organization that holds his/her clearance
- has a Laboratory host/sponsor, who must be a cleared University
of California or Federal employee for whom LANL holds the clearance
IMPORTANT BADGE CHARACTERISTICS
- Expiration date is for either:
- The entire period authorized for the visit, which may not exceed
one year
- The dates, within the authorized visit period, that the visitor
is actually on-site
- Visitor's clearance must be on file (i.e., valid for) at least the
authorized length of the visit
- The clearance of the host/sponsor must be equal to or higher than
that of the visitor
- Badge serial number begins OV (= Official Visitor)
- Color coding on the badge indicates classified access granted and
is consistent with the clearance that DOE personnel would have to hold
to have such access, i.e.,
- Striped blue = access granted is to either SRD or TSRD
- Striped yellow = access granted is to all level / category combinations
except SRD and TSRD
- The color coding on the badge does not indicate
the clearance held by the individual
- For badging periods
- Greater than 10 days, the badge must include a photograph
- Equal to or less than 10 days, no picture is required but is provided,
if requested by the host/sponsor
- Z number appears on the badge
- Visitor's organizational affiliation appears on the badge
- Badge states VISITOR at bottom center
- Reverse side of badge displays:
- Access granted (classification level and category plus any Sigma
authorizations)
- Magnetic stripe (if badge is encoded)
- Standard "If lost, return to ..." statement
- Barcode of Z number
- Barcode of badge serial number
- Site specific: use limited to LANL
- Additional requirements for a particular Laboratory Technical Area
and/or Building may be set by the organization having jurisdiction
- As government property, the badge must be returned
when no longer needed -
- A badge that is not accounted for will result in denial of any
future badging services until the badge is accounted for
- It is the visitor's responsibility to ensure the return of the
badge - giving it to the host instead of directly returning it to
the Badge Office runs the risk of the badge not beging returned.
